I grew up in South Devon where I developed a deep love of the countryside and a strong interest in ecology and environmental responsibility.
I later completed my ophthalmology training in South Wales and spent 12 years there before deciding to return to Devon where I now live with my wife Kate, who is an artist and sailing instructor. I am a very keen water sports enthusiast and enjoy kitesurfing, paddleboarding and swimming whenever possible.
These days I am fortunate enough to be able to split my working hours between Devon and Wales and I feel proud to offer cataract surgery to patients living in these beautiful rural locations.
I have a keen interest in developing devices that deliver improved patient experiences and which make my job, and that of other ophthalmologists, easier. I am proud to have innovated these successful British surgical and medical devices.
I developed the SP.eye intravitreal injection device with other ophthalmologists. It is a highly efficient method that is safe and secure and more comfortable than traditional injection techniques. It is also the first of its kind in the world.
Your ophthalmologist may have recommended injecting a specific type of drug (anti-VEGF) into the back of your eye to prevent new blood vessels growing in the retina. Without treatment these blood vessels can leak fluid and blood, thereby reducing your vision.
The SP.eye precisely guides the very fine needle and may be used without the metal spring usually employed to keep your eyelids open.
enVoi™ is a free app enabling you to refer yourself for surgery and receive a consultation from the comfort and convenience of your own home. This means only one visit to the hospital for the surgery itself.
I developed the enVoi™ specifically for ophthalmology. It has improved both patient experience of cataract surgery and that of colleagues working in community optometry.
I am an experienced NHS consultant ophthalmologist, holding appointments at:
I am also a highly trained and experienced oculoplastic and glaucoma surgeon, having undertaken fellowship training in the UK.
